The Philadelphia 76ers appeared finished before halftime. Instead, they produced a stunning second-half turnaround, defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers 114-106 after falling behind by 29 points in Thursday night’s home opener at Xfinity Arena.
The comeback was the largest in Philadelphia’s play-by-play era and the biggest lead Cleveland has surrendered during that span. It also became the most substantial rally of LeBron James’ 24-year NBA career.
A One-Sided First Half Turns Into a Historic Result
Cleveland controlled nearly every important detail early. Donovan Mitchell attacked confidently, the Cavaliers found success in the middle of their pick-and-roll actions, and Philadelphia repeatedly handed away possessions. The visitors eventually built a 69-40 advantage late in the second quarter.
Mitchell had already scored 30 points through three quarters, making his sudden disappearance in the final period one of the night’s defining developments. Cleveland finished the first half with 69 points, but managed only 37 after the interval, allowing the Sixers to transform the game completely.
The mood inside the building changed just as dramatically. Philadelphia supporters had booed their team as the players left for the break. By the final buzzer, those same fans were creating a deafening celebration as the deficit became a victory.
Nick Nurse Finds the Defensive Answer
Philadelphia head coach Nick Nurse acknowledged that Cleveland’s direct pick-and-rolls had caused major problems before halftime. The Cavaliers used 27 of those actions in the opening half and generated 1.08 points per play, according to GeniusIQ figures cited by ESPN.
After the break, Nurse altered the defensive coverage and forced Cleveland into a far less productive version of the same attack. The Cavaliers ran 20 direct picks in the second half, but their output dropped to 0.56 points per possession.
The adjustment mattered because it removed the foundation of Cleveland’s offence. Once the Cavaliers could no longer create easy advantages from the pick-and-roll, Philadelphia’s defenders stayed connected, contested more shots and made Mitchell work for every opportunity.
Ball security also reversed the game’s direction. The Sixers committed 15 turnovers in the first half, matching their highest total in a half since January 2024. They gave the ball away only twice after halftime, while Cleveland committed 15 second-half turnovers and lost access to the transition chances that had fuelled its early lead.
Maxey Sets the Pace as Philadelphia Closes the Gap
The comeback gained real momentum in the third quarter. Philadelphia opened the period with an 8-0 run and won the frame 37-21. That stretch reduced Cleveland’s advantage to a manageable margin and restored belief inside the arena.
Tyrese Maxey supplied the speed and confidence the Sixers needed. He finished with 32 points and six assists, leading both teams in scoring. One of his most memorable plays came when he caught a transition pass from James and immediately launched a three-pointer without taking a dribble.
The shot forced Cleveland to call timeout and sent Maxey roaring toward the crowd. It was more than a made basket: it signalled that Philadelphia had seized control of the game’s emotional energy.
Jaylen Brown also helped stabilize the group after a quiet opening half. He scored only four points before halftime, his lowest-scoring first half at home since March 2025, but became part of the collective response that carried Philadelphia through the third quarter.
Embiid Delivers the Decisive Blow
Philadelphia still trailed by eight points entering the fourth quarter, so the comeback remained unfinished. The Sixers finally moved in front with 6:54 remaining when Joel Embiid rose over Jarrett Allen and connected on a 16-foot jumper.
That basket gave Philadelphia a 96-95 lead, its first of the night. Embiid then helped the Sixers protect the advantage with seven straight points during the closing stretch. The Cavaliers never regained the lead.
Embiid ended the game with 24 points and seven rebounds, while James added 17 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in his first home appearance for Philadelphia. Afterward, Embiid described the performance as one of the three best games of his career.
The comeback also carried a broader message about the new-look roster. Embiid said this group refused to unravel in the way some previous Philadelphia teams might have. Rookie guard VJ Edgecombe called the atmosphere the best he had experienced as a professional.
A Warning Hidden Inside the Celebration
James enjoyed the remarkable finish, but he also understood the danger of relying on it. The veteran, who created the transition opportunity for Maxey’s three, cautioned that Philadelphia cannot make 29-point recoveries part of its regular plan.
That warning matches the evidence from the game. The Sixers had to overcome careless turnovers, poor early defensive communication and an offence that struggled to slow Cleveland’s preferred actions. Their victory came because Nurse corrected the coverage, the players protected the ball and the stars delivered under pressure.
Philadelphia did not prove that every deficit is recoverable. It showed that a team can completely change a game by making the right adjustment at halftime and executing with discipline afterward. For one unforgettable night, a collapse became the starting point of a historic win.
